Analysis of in bottle ratings

We compared the scores of 111 Bordeaux 2015 (in bottle).

Standard deviation / average rating

The abscissa axis represents the average score attributed by a critic to the 111 wines in the sample.
The y-axis represents the standard deviation or dispersion of scores by critics. As a reminder, this indicates that statistically 68% of the scores are between (the mean - 1x standard deviation) and (the mean + 1x standard deviation).
.

  • The 3 most severe critics are WS, WA (LPB) and JMQ.
  • The mean score difference between the most severe (WS) and the most generous (VN, except JS) is only 1 POINT.
  • The average score difference between the most severe (WS) and the most generous (JS) is 3 POINTS!

Variation BETWEEN EN PRIMEUR AND IN BOTTLE TASTING

The abscissa axis represents the average score attributed by a critic to the 111 wines in the sample.
The y-axis represents the standard deviation or dispersion of notes by critique.
In lower case, the tastings in primeur, in upper case the tastings in bottle.

  • WA: LPB scores are distinguished by a high standard deviation that indicates a clear-cut judgement. No calculable variation between futures and bottle.
  • NM: NM scores have varied little, their levels and distributions are balanced.
  • WS: JM's early notes are rather low and indiscriminate. There is a willingness to limit risks. Bottled notes are up and JM's positions are stronger.
  • JMQ: JMQ was the most severe en primeurs taster. Scores in bottle are up (+0.7 pt) with a balanced distribution of scores.
  • VN: AG has revised its ratings very clearly upwards (+1.2 pt in average), its opinion is also more clear-cut than in en primeur tasting.
  • JS: JS scores suffer from a calibration problem. Its scoring system seems to be shifted by 2 to 3 pts.
While the tasting in bottle should be an opportunity to better differentiate great wines from good wines (as it is the case for WS, VN and JMQ), the distribution is even less pronounced when tasting in bottle.
